The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has given its green light to a significant infrastructure project aimed at transforming the city's road network. The ambitious plan, valued at approximately Rs 6 crore, will be funded under the Government of India's Special Assistance Scheme and is expected to dramatically improve commuting for residents.
Project Approval and Financial Details
During a meeting held on Friday, the civic body's House cleared the crucial agenda, setting the stage for the immediate start of the tendering process. This decision follows a formal request from the local government department, which had asked the Mohali MC for detailed estimates for upgrading roads within municipal limits.
Acting promptly, the corporation submitted the required estimates, amounting to Rs 6 crore, to the chief engineer (civil) on November 10, 2025. Technical approval for works worth Rs 5.78 crore was granted on the very same day, demonstrating the project's priority status.
Strict Guidelines and Tight Deadlines
The approval comes with strict conditions. The work must be executed exclusively using the Special Assistance Funds and in full compliance with government guidelines. A key clause states that any excess expenditure or shortfall in funds will have to be managed by the Mohali MC from its own resources, placing the onus of financial discipline on the local body.
To ensure timely completion as mandated by the central scheme, the MC was directed to obtain administrative approval and float tenders by November 18, 2025. The absolute deadline for project completion is March 31, 2026. Tender details were required to be sent to the head office by November 19 for grant processing.
Final Approval and Future Impact
Subsequently, on November 20, technical approval was accorded for a slightly amended estimate of Rs 6.01 crore. This revised figure includes the cost of a five-year maintenance period for the upgraded roads. The final tender proposal was then presented before the House, where it received the official go-ahead from Mayor Amarjit Singh "Jeeti" Sidhu.
Once the tenders are awarded and work begins, this project is poised to bring a substantial upgrade to Mohali's urban infrastructure. Citizens can look forward to smoother, better-maintained roads that will ease daily travel and enhance connectivity across the city, marking a significant step forward in local development.
