Goa's Mopa Racing Event Faces Pernem Locals' Opposition Over Land Use
After facing resistance in Mormugao, the Indian Racing Festival, a Formula 4 event scheduled for February 14-15 near the Manohar International Airport in Mopa, Goa, is now encountering strong opposition from Pernem locals. The residents are demanding the cancellation of the event, citing concerns over land use and environmental safety.
Protests and Legal Threats Escalate
On Friday, the Goa Kul Mundkar Sanghatana staged a symbolic 'dharna' at Gandhi Udyan in Pernem to voice their dissent. Protesters submitted a memorandum to the Pernem deputy collector, warning of a potential legal battle if the event is not scrapped. This follows the event's relocation from Mormugao due to similar local opposition there.
Allegations of Land Acquisition Violations
Advocate Jitendra Gaonkar raised a critical legal point, alleging that Goa lacks the authority to host commercial races on land acquired specifically for public utility purposes, such as the airport. He argued that this violates the original intent of the land acquisition process. "The hosting of a private event violates the concession agreement with GMR," Gaonkar stated, highlighting potential breaches in contractual obligations.
Economic and Social Exclusion Concerns
Dipesh Naik, coordinator of the Goa Kul Mundkar Sanghatana, accused the government of "cheating" local farmers. He pointed out that while land values have increased by 100% since acquisition at low rates, locals remain excluded from job opportunities and project partnerships. This economic disparity has fueled resentment among the community.
Environmental and Safety Risks Highlighted
Tamboxem-Mopa-Ugvem sarpanch, Subodh Mahale, criticized the secretive planning of the event, noting that the panchayat was never consulted. He warned of staunch opposition if the village's ecology is adversely affected. Additionally, activists have raised alarms about the proposed racing circuit's proximity to fuel storage tanks, citing potential fire and explosion risks that could endanger public safety.
