Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Tuesday launched a sharp counterattack against BJP leader Ramesh Jigjinagi, asserting that the Congress party possesses the spirit of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and will not be intimidated by those who lack constitutional recognition.
Kharge's Strong Response
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Kharge said, "We have Ambedkar's blood in our veins. We are not afraid of those who do not have constitutional recognition." The minister's remarks came in response to Jigjinagi's recent comments targeting the Congress party.
Kharge, who is the son of Congress veteran Mallikarjun Kharge, emphasized the party's commitment to the Constitution and its principles. He accused Jigjinagi of making statements that undermine the constitutional framework.
Political Context
The exchange between the two leaders highlights the ongoing political tensions in Karnataka. Jigjinagi, a former minister and BJP leader, had earlier made remarks that the Congress took exception to. Kharge's response underscores the Congress party's strategy of invoking Ambedkar's legacy to counter the BJP's narrative.
Kharge further stated, "Those who do not respect the Constitution have no right to comment on those who uphold it." He called upon the BJP to clarify its stance on constitutional values.
Reactions from Political Circles
The statement has drawn mixed reactions from political observers. While Congress supporters have lauded Kharge for his bold stance, BJP leaders have dismissed his comments as politically motivated. The issue is expected to escalate in the coming days as both parties prepare for upcoming elections.
Kharge's remarks also come amid a broader debate on the role of the Constitution in Indian politics, with various parties invoking Ambedkar's teachings to strengthen their positions.
