The district administration of Pathanamthitta in Kerala has issued a crucial safety alert for pilgrims heading to the Sabarimala temple and local residents. This warning comes in anticipation of a possible rise in water levels in the region's rivers, triggered by the impending release of water from the Moozhiyar dam.
Dam Reaches Critical Red Alert Level
On Saturday, the water level in the Moozhiyar dam reached the critical red alert mark of 190 metres. District Collector S Prem Krishnan stated that if the water level increases further to the maximum capacity of 192.63 metres, the authorities will have no choice but to open the dam's shutters. This action would release a significant volume of water into the Kakkad river.
Strict Advisory for Public and Pilgrims
The Collector's advisory is explicit and urgent. All residents living along the riverbanks from the Moozhiyar dam down to the Kakkad powerhouse must remain vigilant. Furthermore, the large number of Sabarimala pilgrims currently in the area have been specifically instructed to exercise extreme caution.
The administration has strongly advised everyone to avoid entering the rivers under any circumstances. The sudden release of water from the dam can lead to rapid and dangerous increases in river flow, creating hazardous conditions for anyone in or near the water.
