Salem DYFI Stages Vigorous Protest Against Water Supply Privatization
Members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) organized a significant demonstration in Salem on Tuesday, vociferously opposing the Salem Municipal Corporation's (SMC) controversial decision to privatize the city's piped drinking water supply system. The protestors demanded the immediate cancellation of a recently floated tender valued at a staggering Rs 4,315 crore, which aims to transfer control of the essential water infrastructure to a private entity.
Symbolic March and Attempted Siege at Corporation Office
In a visually striking display of dissent, DYFI activists marched through the city streets carrying a water jug tied to a pole, symbolizing their fight for public access to water. The atmosphere was charged as participants shouted slogans condemning the SMC's move, which they argue could lead to increased costs and reduced accountability for a vital public service. The protest escalated with an attempt to lay siege to the Salem Municipal Corporation office, highlighting the intensity of public sentiment against the privatization plan.
Following the march, the protestors formally submitted a petition to corporation officials, outlining their grievances and insisting on a reversal of the decision. DYFI district coordinator V Periyasamy issued a stern warning, stating that if the corporation fails to cancel the tender, a series of further protests will be organized to amplify their demand.
Growing Opposition from Political Quarters
The DYFI protest is not an isolated incident. On the preceding Monday, opposition AIADMK councillors staged a sit-in protest during a regular meeting of the Salem Corporation council. This coordinated opposition from both youth activists and political representatives underscores a broader consensus against handing over the drinking water supply system to private parties. The dual protests signal mounting pressure on the SMC to reconsider its stance, with concerns centered on potential impacts on water affordability, quality, and public control over a critical resource.
The situation in Salem reflects a larger debate on privatization of public utilities, with activists and opposition groups rallying to protect community interests. As tensions simmer, all eyes are on the Salem Municipal Corporation's next move in response to these escalating demands.
