Shivakumar Defers to Party Leadership on Chief Ministerial Prospects
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress President D K Shivakumar stated on Saturday that only time will reveal when he might assume the chief minister's role, emphasizing that all party members must respect the decisions of the Congress high command. His remarks come as internal tensions with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resurface, highlighted by Siddaramaiah's son Yathindra asserting his father will complete a full five-year term.
Power Struggle Intensifies Amid Speculation
Shivakumar addressed reporters, acknowledging widespread desire among supporters, legislators, and the media for his elevation. "People, legislators, you (media), and everyone have the desire, but we should all abide by what the party says," he commented. When questioned about potential timing, such as after the upcoming state budget, he cryptically responded, "time will answer." This follows a reported power-sharing agreement from 2023 that has fueled ongoing speculation about a leadership change.
Reactions to Dalit Demands and Sarcastic Jabs
In Chikkamagaluru, Shivakumar was asked about dalit organizations advocating for Home Minister G Parameshwara as chief minister. He responded neutrally, "what's wrong in it," adding that supporters naturally express such aspirations. Meanwhile, Congress MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah claimed the high command supports his father's full term, calling the issue settled. Shivakumar sarcastically retorted, "Yathindra is our high command, and let's accept what he says very respectfully," underscoring the deepening rift.
Budget Preparations and Metro Fare Concerns
As the leadership debate unfolds, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who also serves as finance minister, is conducting pre-budget meetings with various departments. The 2026-27 budget, expected in March, would mark his record 17th presentation, following his 16th budget last year. Concurrently, Shivakumar, in his capacity as Bengaluru Development Minister, addressed concerns over a recent metro rail fare hike. He noted that the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had not consulted the state government, stating, "We don't want to trouble the people. What is the financial structure and what has happened, I will look into it," promising to discuss the matter with authorities upon his return to Bengaluru.
The political landscape in Karnataka remains volatile, with the Congress government passing the halfway mark of its term in November 2025, intensifying calls for clarity on leadership. Shivakumar's measured responses reflect a strategic deference to party hierarchy, while Siddaramaiah's camp asserts stability, setting the stage for continued internal negotiations and public scrutiny.
