UBT MP Omraje Nimbalkar Joins Shinde-Led Shiv Sena in Maharashtra
UBT MP Omraje Nimbalkar Joins Shinde-Led Shiv Sena

In a significant political development in Maharashtra, Dharashiv Member of Parliament Omraje Nimbalkar has officially joined the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This defection marks another major setback for the Uddhav Thackeray-led UBT faction, which has been losing key leaders ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections.

Nimbalkar's Move to Shinde Camp

Omraje Nimbalkar, who was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Dharashiv constituency under the UBT banner, announced his decision to switch allegiance to the Shinde-led Shiv Sena on Wednesday. The move comes as a surprise to many political observers, as Nimbalkar was considered a loyalist of the Thackeray family. However, sources indicate that he was dissatisfied with the functioning of the UBT faction and felt that the Shinde-led government was better positioned to deliver development to his constituency.

Impact on UBT and Maharashtra Politics

This defection is a significant blow to the UBT faction, which has been struggling to retain its legislative strength after the split in the Shiv Sena in June 2022. The UBT faction now has only 15 MPs in the Lok Sabha, down from the original 19 elected in 2019. With the state assembly elections scheduled for later this year, the loss of a sitting MP further weakens UBT's position in the Dharashiv region.

According to political analyst Dr. Prakash Joshi, "Nimbalkar's departure is a clear indication that the Shinde faction is consolidating its hold over the original Shiv Sena vote bank. The UBT faction will find it increasingly difficult to counter the Shinde-led government's appeal, especially with the backing of the BJP."

Reactions from Both Factions

Welcoming Nimbalkar into the party fold, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said, "I am delighted that Omraje Nimbalkar has joined our party. His experience and dedication will strengthen our efforts to serve the people of Maharashtra." Shinde also criticized the UBT leadership for neglecting the needs of the people.

On the other hand, the UBT faction expressed disappointment over Nimbalkar's decision. UBT spokesperson Sanjay Raut said, "This is a betrayal of the trust reposed in him by the voters of Dharashiv. We will take this matter seriously and ensure that such defections do not go unnoticed."

Future Implications

Nimbalkar's defection is expected to have a ripple effect on other UBT legislators and party workers who are reportedly unhappy with the current state of affairs. The Shinde faction, which already has the support of 50 MLAs and 13 MPs, is likely to attract more defectors in the coming weeks. Political observers believe that this could further solidify the Shinde-BJP alliance's grip on power in Maharashtra.
