Chennai's Deputy Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, on Sunday showered praise on Non-Resident Tamils (NRTs), crediting them with a pivotal role in propelling Tamil Nadu to the number one position in India's economic rankings. The accolades came during the commencement of the Non-Resident Tamils Welfare Day celebrations in the state capital.
Celebrating the Global Tamil Community
The two-day event saw enthusiastic participation from scores of Tamils residing in foreign nations and other parts of India. A key highlight was the distribution of awards by Udhayanidhi Stalin to children of NRTs who excelled in various competitions, including oratory, storytelling, and fancy dress. In a special gesture, the Deputy CM also presented a veena to Malaiappan Nagalingam, the Honorary Consul of Mauritius in Chennai.
Government's Proactive Welfare Measures
Udhayanidhi Stalin underscored the proactive efforts of the Tamil Nadu government in safeguarding the welfare of Tamils across the globe. He specifically recalled state-led rescue missions to bring back Tamils from war-affected countries, emphasizing the administration's commitment to protecting its diaspora in times of trouble. The event featured stalls and a photo exhibition detailing these government initiatives for the global Tamil community.
Structured Support Through Welfare Board
The government's structured approach is evident in the Tamil Nadu Non-Resident Tamils Welfare Board, which has already registered a significant 32,000 members. Each registered member is issued an official ID card by the board, formalizing the state's connection and support system for its overseas citizens.
The celebrations are set to continue with Chief Minister M K Stalin participating on the second day. He is scheduled to distribute awards to NRTs who have achieved excellence in their respective fields, further cementing the state's recognition of its global community.
