UP Approves Rs 403 Cr Scheme for Social Justice Memorials

UP Government Launches Major Initiative to Honor Social Justice Leaders

In a significant move viewed as a strategic outreach to various communities, particularly Dalits and OBCs, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet has given its approval to a comprehensive scheme aimed at renovating and beautifying statues and memorials dedicated to icons of social justice. This decision comes ahead of the crucial Assembly elections scheduled for 2027 in the state.

Dr BR Ambedkar Murti Vikas Yojna: Key Details and Funding

Named the Dr BR Ambedkar Murti Vikas Yojna, the initiative will see an initial allocation of Rs 403 crore in its first phase. The scheme targets the beautification of 10 existing monuments in each of the state's 403 Assembly constituencies, ensuring widespread implementation across Uttar Pradesh.

Minister for Social Welfare (Independent Charge) Asim Arun emphasized that while the scheme bears Ambedkar's name, it is not limited to Dalit icons alone. He clarified that memorials of revered figures such as Sant Ravidas, Sant Kabir, Valmiki, and Jyotiba Phule will also be included, highlighting the program's broader focus on individuals who have championed social change and justice.

Political Context and Historical Background

Arun pointed out that the BJP-led government aims to pay respect to these communities, whom he claimed were previously insulted during the Samajwadi Party's tenure. He referenced instances where former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav altered the names of districts, universities, and medical colleges that were originally named after Dalit icons, framing the new scheme as a corrective measure to honor their legacies.

Launch Date and Implementation Timeline

The scheme is set to be officially launched on April 14, coinciding with Ambedkar Jayanti. On this occasion, the government will organize state-wide programs to inform the public about the initiative. Arun detailed that the first phase will focus on memorials and statues completed by December 31, 2025, with a budget of Rs 10 lakh per site.

This funding will cover various enhancement works, including:

  • Creation or renovation of boundary walls
  • Installation of canopies
  • Development of seating areas

A structured protocol has been established to identify eligible personalities for the scheme, encompassing cultural icons, social justice advocates, and other notable individuals.

Broader Objectives and Community Impact

Beyond mere preservation, the scheme aims to achieve multiple socio-economic benefits:

  1. Safeguarding Memorials: Ensuring the upkeep and dignity of these historical sites.
  2. Area Development: Enhancing the surroundings of the memorials to improve local infrastructure.
  3. Employment Generation: Creating job opportunities at the grassroots level through construction and maintenance activities.
  4. Educational Value: Providing younger generations with opportunities to learn about and draw inspiration from these great personalities, fostering a sense of pride and historical awareness.

An official involved in the planning noted that this initiative is designed not only to honor the past but also to contribute positively to the present and future of Uttar Pradesh's communities.
