Vaiko Expresses Concern Over Court's Deepam Ruling in Madurai
MDMK chief Vaiko has voiced serious concern regarding a recent Madras High Court order. The court directed that a deepam be lit on a specific pillar atop Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai. Vaiko made these remarks during a public meeting at Obulapadithurai in Madurai on Monday evening. This event marked the conclusion of his 'equality march' or samathuva payanam.
Respect for All Religions and Communal Harmony
Vaiko emphasized his respect for all faiths during his speech. He stated clearly, "We are not enemies of Hindus. I respect all religions." The leader stressed the importance of avoiding bloodshed in the name of caste and religion. He shared a personal anecdote from his march. A Hindu adigalar, a Christian priest, and an Islamic imam greeted him along the way. They handed him a copy of the Indian Constitution as a symbolic gesture.
He elaborated on the historical significance of Thiruparankundram hill. The site houses both a Murugan temple and a Muslim dargah. Vaiko noted that no major problems have occurred there for the past 100 to 150 years. He mentioned that a previous dispute over the hill was settled by the privy council long ago.
Madurai stands as a powerful symbol of communal harmony, according to Vaiko. He cited a beautiful tradition during the Chithirai festival. This festival celebrates the celestial wedding of deities Meenakshi and Sundareswarar. Muslim residents living around the temple area traditionally present 'Manjal Kayiru' or mangalsutra threads to women. This practice represents an age-old custom of unity and respect.
Growing Menace of Drug and Alcohol Addiction
Vaiko shifted his focus to a pressing social issue. He expressed deep concern over increasing alcohol and drug addiction among the youth. The leader revealed a troubling development. "I am pained to say that drugs have entered even women's colleges," he stated. He directly linked drugs to many crimes in society. Vaiko called for urgent action to protect young people from falling into addiction.
He explained the motivation behind his recent foot march. "I undertook this foot march out of concern for the future of their children," said Vaiko. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the poor and affectionate mothers who welcomed him during his journey. The MDMK chief also recalled some of his previous key marches. These included protests against the Tuticorin Sterlite copper unit and the neutrino project.
Call for Ethical Representation and Family Tribute
Trichy MP Durai Vaiko, the son of Vaiko, also addressed the gathering. He spoke about the qualities required in people's representatives. Durai Vaiko urged voters to select candidates based on their work, public service, and honesty. "Beyond the boundaries of caste, religion, politics, and party, you should elect good people and public servants as your representatives," he advised.
He praised his father, MDMK chief Vaiko, for his dedication. "At the age of 82, with a mechanical heart, he successfully completed his march for equality," said Durai Vaiko with admiration. The equality march was officially flagged off by Chief Minister M K Stalin in Trichy on January 2.
The public meeting saw the presence of several notable figures. MDMK MLA M Boominathan and DMK MLA G Thalapathy attended the event. Madurai MP Su Venkatesan was also present. The gathering included lyricist Vairamuthu and popular actor Sathyaraj, showing broad support for the cause.
