Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted a detailed inspection of temporary night shelters in Gorakhpur on Wednesday, as a severe cold wave continues to grip the state. The visit aimed to review arrangements for the homeless and ensure their protection during the harsh winter conditions.
On-Ground Review and Direct Interaction
During his visit, the Chief Minister personally inspected two temporary night shelters located at Bargadwa and Raptinagar in Gorakhpur. He interacted directly with the inmates staying at these facilities, inquiring about their well-being and seeking feedback on the provided amenities. CM Yogi also distributed blankets and food packets to people both inside the shelters and to those found outside, emphasizing immediate relief.
The occupants of the shelters expressed their satisfaction with the arrangements and thanked the state government for the timely intervention and support amid the biting cold. This marked the Chief Minister's third such inspection in Gorakhpur within a month, following similar visits on December 10 and December 28.
Government Directives and State-Wide Measures
Addressing the media after the inspection, CM Yogi Adityanath stated that clear and strict directions have been issued to all district administrations, municipal corporations, and urban local bodies. The primary directive is to ensure that no homeless person is forced to sleep in the open, on pavements, or near railway tracks during this period of extreme weather.
"Every homeless person must be brought to night shelters and provided a safe and dignified place to stay," the Chief Minister asserted. He highlighted that the state government is fully committed to safeguarding the lives of the poor and vulnerable.
He informed that adequate funds have already been released to all districts across Uttar Pradesh to execute cold wave protection measures. These measures, to be implemented on a war-footing, include:
- Large-scale operation and management of night shelters.
- Distribution of blankets and woollen clothing.
- Lighting of bonfires at strategic public places.
Shelter Capacity and Appeal for Public Support
In Gorakhpur city alone, 19 night shelters are currently operational, providing temporary refuge for approximately 1,000 people who would otherwise be compelled to sleep on roadsides. The CM confirmed that all shelters are safe, well-managed, and functioning in an organised manner, with similar arrangements being replicated statewide.
Beyond government action, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also made an appeal to voluntary organisations and charitable institutions. He urged them to come forward and supplement government efforts by distributing blankets and warm clothing to help the needy survive the cold wave.
The proactive inspections and directives underscore the administration's focus on preventive action and direct governance to tackle the challenges posed by the severe winter season, particularly for the homeless population.
