Beach Volleyball Tour in Odisha Adapts Amid Global Tensions and Visa Issues

The Dutee Chand Athletics Stadium at KIIT in Bhubaneswar has undergone a remarkable transformation, turning into a vibrant venue for the FIVB Beach Pro Tour Challenge. Despite being far from any natural sea beach, the stadium now features numerous sand courts, including four competition courts and two additional ones for warm-up sessions, all created with processed sand transported by 250 trucks.

Team Withdrawals Due to Global Conflicts and Visa Problems

As the competition entered its third day, a significant absence was noted: approximately 25 teams from countries such as Austria, Italy, France, Germany, Finland, Ukraine, and Switzerland did not participate. According to an official from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), the ongoing crisis in West Asia was a primary reason for these withdrawals. Additionally, many teams faced challenges in obtaining approved visas, further complicating their participation.

This shortage of teams led to a lack of competitive intensity in some of the opening round matches. Belgian player Kyan Vercauteren, who along with his partner Joppe van Langendonck won the U21 World Championship in 2023, commented on the situation. He expressed hope for more exciting matches in the upcoming days, despite the reduced field.

Star Presence and Future Venue Plans

Despite the absences, the event still attracted notable athletes, including US Olympian Sara Hughes. She praised the innovative conversion of the athletics stadium into a beach volleyball arena, highlighting the quality of the processed sand used.

Looking ahead, organizers have ambitious plans for the tournament, which is scheduled to take place in Odisha over the next two years. Gaganendu Dash, director general of KIIT and KISS sports and secretary general of the Odisha Volleyball Association, revealed discussions with state tourism secretary Balwant Singh. The goal is to relocate the event to a proper beach venue, possibly in Gopalpur or Puri, starting next year. This move would require approval from all stakeholders, including the FIVB, but Dash expressed readiness to support the government in this endeavor.

It is worth noting that even at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, beach volleyball competitions were held on man-made sand courts near the Eiffel Tower, demonstrating that such adaptations are not uncommon in the sport.

Fan Engagement and Long-Term Goals

Another challenge faced by the tournament has been low fan attendance. On Friday, the stands were primarily filled with school students, who enjoyed the matches enthusiastically. However, the director general remains optimistic, viewing this as an opportunity to inspire young people to take up beach volleyball in the future.

Dash outlined a bold vision for the sport in India, aiming for an Indian team to win a medal when the event returns. He also emphasized the desire to see more Indian teams participate regularly at the international level, with the ultimate goal of fielding an Indian team in beach volleyball at the Olympics. While this target is ambitious, the support from KIIT makes it a feasible aspiration, signaling a promising future for the sport in the region.
