Bopanna Reflects on Maiden Men's Doubles Grand Slam Title

Rohan Bopanna, the former Indian tennis star and multiple Wimbledon semifinalist, recently reflected on his historic maiden men's doubles Grand Slam title at the 2024 Australian Open. Speaking ahead of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, Bopanna expressed gratitude for persevering through a long wait for a major trophy.

Bopanna's Long-Awaited Triumph

Bopanna captured the men's doubles title at the Australian Open in 2024 alongside Matthew Ebden, ending a 13-year drought since his first Grand Slam victory. He had previously won the French Open mixed doubles title in 2017. At 46, he became the oldest man in tennis history to win a Grand Slam title and the oldest World No. 1 doubles player.

"When it all came quickly, I thought, 'Oh, next year everything else will change.' Little did I know that it would take another 13 years for it to happen," Bopanna said in an interview with JioStar. "But I am glad I stuck around. I stayed with the grind and did all the right things. I think that is what you need to do to remain relevant in the sport."

Advice from Idol Stefan Edberg

Bopanna recalled meeting his childhood idol, two-time Wimbledon champion Stefan Edberg, who offered pivotal advice. Edberg told him to focus on his own strengths rather than comparing himself to peers. "Never look at what your peers are doing. Do what works best for you. Do not do something just because someone else is doing it. Look at your strengths, work on them, and build on them," Bopanna quoted Edberg. He added that this guidance carried him throughout his career.

Wimbledon 2026 and Retirement

The 2026 Wimbledon main draw runs from June 29 to July 12 at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Bopanna, a multi-time semifinalist at the tournament, retired from professional tennis in November 2025. He represented India at the Olympics, finishing fourth in mixed doubles at Rio 2016 with Sania Mirza, and was a Davis Cup stalwart for over two decades.

Bopanna's longevity and achievements stand as a testament to his dedication. His advice to aspiring players: stick with the grind and remain relevant in a competitive sport.
