Dallas Cowboys Fall Short in Pursuit of Star Pass Rusher Maxx Crosby
The Dallas Cowboys were actively involved in the offseason chase for All-Pro defensive end Maxx Crosby, but their efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful. Despite strong interest and negotiations, the Cowboys missed out on the elite pass rusher after the Las Vegas Raiders finalized a blockbuster trade sending Crosby to the Baltimore Ravens.
Ravens Secure Deal with Premium Draft Capital
The trade that moved Crosby to Baltimore saw the Ravens part with significant future assets. Baltimore sent two first-round draft picks—specifically their 2026 and 2027 selections—to Las Vegas, a steep price that Dallas was not prepared to match. This aggressive move by the Ravens immediately positioned them as the frontrunner in the bidding race, overshadowing other suitors including the Cowboys.
Cowboys Set Firm Limits on Trade Offer
Reports indicate that the Cowboys entered negotiations with clear financial and strategic boundaries. Dallas reportedly proposed a package centered around their No. 12 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, coupled with a future second-round selection. The franchise even expressed a willingness to include a veteran player in the deal to sweeten the offer.
However, the Raiders' priorities did not align with this approach. Las Vegas was primarily focused on acquiring premium draft capital rather than veteran players, which meant the Cowboys' offer never reached the value threshold the Raiders were seeking. This mismatch in negotiation goals ultimately hindered Dallas's ability to compete effectively.
Previous Trades Constrain Cowboys' Flexibility
The Cowboys' recent activity in the trade market played a crucial role in their cautious approach. Past deals, such as those involving standout players like Micah Parsons and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, had already depleted some of Dallas's future draft resources. As a result, team decision-makers were hesitant to further weaken their draft capital by parting with multiple first-round picks for Crosby.
Despite long-standing admiration for Crosby, whom they viewed as an ideal fit for their defensive scheme, the Cowboys set firm limits on how far they would go in negotiations. When the bidding escalated beyond their comfort zone, the franchise chose to step back rather than risk overextending themselves financially and strategically.
Future Pass Rush Options for Dallas
With Crosby now off the table, the Cowboys must explore alternative avenues to bolster their pass rush. Dallas recorded a relatively low sack total in the 2025 season and had hoped Crosby would be a transformative addition to their defensive line.
Moving forward, the team is expected to turn to free agency and the NFL Draft to address this need. One potential target is Trey Hendrickson, who has been linked to Dallas since his departure from the Cincinnati Bengals. As free agency approaches, additional pass-rush options may emerge, providing the Cowboys with further opportunities to strengthen their defensive front and remain competitive in the league.
