Fernando Mendoza Expresses Admiration for Las Vegas Raiders at NFL Combine
Fernando Mendoza did not conceal his admiration for the Las Vegas Raiders when his name emerged as a potential candidate for the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft. The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback understands precisely why he is in Indianapolis this week, participating in the NFL combine. The Raiders are conducting thorough evaluations at the event, and across league circles, expectations are clear: Mendoza, the Indiana quarterback who electrified college football in 2025, sits firmly at the top of their draft board.
Las Vegas Seeks a Franchise Face in Mendoza
Las Vegas desperately requires a new face for the franchise, and Mendoza perfectly fits that description. He led the Indiana Hoosiers to an undefeated perfect season and a national championship, throwing an impressive 41 touchdowns against only six interceptions. His exceptional command of the field, combined with his ideal size and impressive mobility, has elevated his draft stock into elite territory. Currently, the Silver and Black are scrutinizing not just his physical arm talent but also his mental acuity and football intelligence.
Mendoza Opens Up on Unforgettable Tom Brady Conversation
The first formal meeting between Mendoza and the Raiders occurred this week at the combine, with most of the front office and coaching staff present in the room. At a pivotal moment, minority owner and NFL legend Tom Brady joined the discussion via telephone. For Mendoza, that interaction held significant personal meaning.
"When I walked into the formal interview for the Raiders, I was able to say a brief hi to Brady, and that was very special to me, and I look forward to meeting him in person one day and learning from him," Mendoza shared. He later elaborated on his profound admiration for Brady, stating, "I mean, who hasn't admired Tom Brady? That opportunity would be fantastic. Tom Brady, I believe, was the greatest quarterback of all time by a wide margin, and to be able to have the opportunity to be mentored by him, it would mean so much. And especially to learn, and I'm all about learning. So from Day 1, I got to learn a lot. It's going to be a long journey. And to potentially have a mentor like that, it'd be pretty impressive and pretty meaningful."
Intense and Detailed Combine Interview Process
The interview itself was notably detailed and intense. Coaches rigorously tested how quickly Mendoza could absorb complex football concepts. They installed a specific play and walked him through their quarterback progression system, with Mendoza observing striking similarities to his college experience.
"They are very football savvy, which was great to see," Mendoza remarked. "They taught me a play, and they had their whole progression of how they teach quarterbacks to play, and it was similar to how Indiana’s progression was. I am a very type A guy, and they had all the details of each play and what to do when you get a problem with each play."
He described the overall conversation as "fantastic," adding, "The coaching staff was in there. We went over some of my previous plays, drew some plays on the board."
Mendoza Maintains Humble Perspective Amid Draft Hype
Despite the widespread speculation, Mendoza is not making any assumptions about his draft destination. "Well, the pick has not been selected yet," he cautioned. "Whatever team drafts me, I'm extremely grateful. Whether it's the No. 1 pick or the last pick in the draft, I'd be blessed and honored to be drafted by any team and give them my all."
His focus remains straightforward and singular. "You need to play well and that’s where all my focus goes in. Football, football, football."
If the Raiders are seeking leadership, discipline, and a quarterback intrinsically wired to learn and improve, they already know precisely where to direct their attention. Fernando Mendoza represents a compelling blend of talent and temperament, poised to make an immediate impact at the professional level.
