Rio Ferdinand's Family Takes Shelter in Basement Amid Dubai Missile Strikes

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has provided a chilling update from Dubai, where his family has been forced to seek refuge in their basement following missile strikes from Iran that shook areas close to their home. The 47-year-old football legend described the situation as "scary" for his family as loud explosions and fighter jets were heard overhead throughout the region.

A Sudden Change to Daily Routine

Rio Ferdinand, his wife Kate Ferdinand, 34, and their children Cree, five, Shae, two, and Rio's daughter Tia, 14, moved to the United Arab Emirates in August last year seeking a new lifestyle. Now, instead of their usual daily activities, the family has been sleeping in their basement for safety as tensions escalate in the Middle East.

Speaking on his podcast "Rio Ferdinand Presents," the former England international gave fans a detailed picture of what life has been like during this frightening period. "Been a different week for me, not going to lie," he confessed. "It's frightening when you hear missiles, planes and fighter jets going above us, and you're hearing big bombs."

Parenting Through Fear

Ferdinand explained that the most challenging aspect has been maintaining composure for his young children. "It's telling your kids what it is and helping them navigate through this moment," he added. Despite the palpable fear, Ferdinand emphasized that they feel protected and are strictly following official advice to remain indoors.

As the situation intensified, the family received guidance to move into their basement on the first night of heavy bombardment. "We were advised to go into the basement on the first night and we were down here sleeping with duvets and stuff," Ferdinand revealed. "My studio has become my bunker."

Kate Ferdinand's Emotional Response

Kate Ferdinand also shared her experience openly on Instagram after what she described as a "very scary night." She wrote, "Thank you for all of your messages. We are safe. The government are doing an amazing job of keeping it that way."

She added that while she felt understandably nervous, she believed they were in safe hands. In a touching moment, she shared how their young children Cree and Shae treated the basement experience like an unexpected sleepover, finding moments of normalcy amidst the chaos.

Family Separated by Circumstance

Rio Ferdinand's older sons, Lorenz, 19, and Tate, 17, did not relocate to Dubai and remain in the United Kingdom where they continue to focus on their football careers. In earlier interviews with LBC Radio and The National, Ferdinand explained that the move to Dubai was intended to allow more quality family time and focus on his younger children's education.

For now, the family remains together indoors, hoping for calmer nights ahead as regional tensions continue to unfold. The situation has highlighted how quickly circumstances can change for expatriate families living in regions experiencing geopolitical instability.
