Abhishek Sharma Ruled Out of Namibia Clash Due to Severe Stomach Infection
Abhishek Sharma Out vs Namibia with Stomach Infection

Abhishek Sharma Sidelined for Namibia Match After Severe Health Scare

On the eve of India's crucial T20 World Cup encounter against the USA at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, opener Abhishek Sharma was in blistering form, smashing the ball with authority and showcasing why he is the top-ranked T20I batter. His performance hinted at a player poised to dominate the 2026 T20 World Cup. However, a sudden and severe stomach infection, accompanied by high fever and significant weight loss, has forced the 24-year-old to withdraw from India's second World Cup game against Namibia on Thursday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Health Update and Hospitalization Details

India batter Tilak Varma provided an update on Wednesday, stating, "He went to the hospital for examination. He is discharged today. We have one more day to take the call," when questioned about Abhishek Sharma's condition. In his absence, Sanju Samson will open the innings alongside Ishan Kishan, altering India's batting lineup.

Sources reveal that on February 6, after a net session at the Wankhede Stadium, Abhishek consumed something in Mumbai that triggered an upset stomach. Despite feeling unwell on match day, he opted to play against the USA. His innings lasted just one ball, and he was notably absent from the dugout during the match and the post-game handshakes after India's 29-run victory. The stomach infection worsened, leading to a high fever.

Deterioration and Weather Impact

The southpaw traveled with the team to New Delhi, where his health declined further. Over the past few weeks, the Indian squad has competed in Nagpur, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Mumbai—all warmer venues compared to Delhi. While winter in North India is ending, mornings and evenings remain chilly, and this abrupt weather change likely exacerbated the destructive batter's condition.

Suffering from drastic weight loss due to dehydration and fluid loss, the BCCI medical team admitted Abhishek to a Delhi hospital as a precautionary measure. He did not accompany the team to the ground for Wednesday's training session.

Coach's Comments and Future Prospects

India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate addressed the situation at a press conference, saying, "Abhi [Abhishek] still has a few issues with his tummy. We are hopeful that he will be available for the game in two days' time." He added, "We're waiting on Abhi's fitness more than anything, and that will again open up a few different combinations."

However, due to the severe weight loss, the team management has decided not to risk his health, confirming that Abhishek will not feature in the Namibia fixture. It is also learned that Abhishek Sharma has summoned his personal trainer to Delhi, who will stay with him before the team departs for the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match in Colombo on February 15.

This development underscores the physical toll of international cricket and the importance of player welfare in high-stakes tournaments like the T20 World Cup.
