Sanjay Bangar Defends India's Aggressive Batting Approach After USA Scare
Bangar: No Need to Overanalyse India's Batting vs USA

Former Batting Coach Backs India's Aggressive Mindset Despite Early Scare

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has strongly defended the Indian cricket team's batting approach following their tense opening T20 World Cup match against the United States, stating there is no need for excessive analysis of the performance that saw early wickets tumble.

Risk-Reward Balance in Modern T20 Cricket

Speaking on JioStar, Bangar emphasized that the current Indian batting lineup's aggressive philosophy, while inherently risky, has delivered consistent results over the past year and a half. "I don't think Indian batters should overanalyse what happened at Wankhede against the USA," Bangar stated, as reported by PTI. "The approach this Indian batting line-up plays with nowadays in T20 cricket is obviously fraught with risk."

He explained that when teams commit to an attacking mindset, occasional batting collapses become inevitable. "On days like that, when a couple of wickets fall, and you still want to keep going hard, you are bound to lose wickets in clusters," Bangar noted, while acknowledging the team might consider minor tactical adjustments without abandoning their core philosophy.

Recovery and Victory Despite Early Collapse

India found themselves in serious trouble at 77 for six in the 13th over during their match at Wankhede Stadium, but managed to recover sufficiently to secure a 29-run victory over the USA. Bangar pointed to this resilience as evidence of the team's strength and adaptability.

"If there is one learning, it is to maybe slow down slightly, but not have too much of a doubt in your approach," he advised. "That fearless style has given you a lot of success. Keep backing your abilities and keep playing the way this Indian batting unit has approached T20 cricket over the last 18 months or so."

Experience Meets Fearlessness in Current Lineup

Bangar highlighted the ideal combination of maturity and aggression within the current Indian batting group. "When I look at this Indian batting line-up, it has a great mix of maturity as well as fearlessness," the former all-rounder observed. "Now, in terms of maturity, you have players who can adjust to the needs of the situation."

He specifically mentioned Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya as batters who embody this balanced approach. "So, if India find themselves in a similar position again, the onus may be on one of those three to steady the innings a little bit, while the batters around them continue to play the way they have been playing," Bangar suggested, adding that this tactical nuance might be discussed within the team moving forward.

Squad Updates and Selection Considerations

Looking ahead to India's upcoming match against Namibia on Thursday, Bangar discussed potential team changes and Washington Sundar's fitness status. "It's great news that Washington Sundar is going to join the team," he said, praising the management's patience with the all-rounder.

Bangar noted that Sundar's continued inclusion in the squad despite initial unavailability demonstrates the team's desire to maintain consistent combinations. "If, say for instance, a spin-bowling all-rounder is required, Washington Sundar can certainly come in," he explained, though he doesn't anticipate Sundar playing in Delhi.

Regarding pace bowling options, Bangar predicted Jasprit Bumrah would return to the playing eleven, with the in-form Mohammed Siraj likely making way. This selection insight underscores the difficult decisions facing team management as they balance form, fitness, and tactical requirements throughout the tournament.
