Constituency Profile

Chandannagar, officially known as Chandannagore, is constituency number 189 located in the Hooghly district. It falls under the Hooghly Lok Sabha constituency. The city has a rich colonial heritage as a former French territory and was merged with India in 1950. The 18th-century waterfront, the Strand, and the famous Jagadhatri Puja are key cultural landmarks that define the constituency's identity. The area is largely urban and houses the Chandannagar Municipal Corporation.

Previous Elections

In the 2021 assembly election, singer-turned-politician Indranil Sen of the TMC retained the seat, having won it previously. Deepanjan Kumar Guha of the BJP had contested in 2021 as well and was again the party's nominee for 2026. In 2016, Indranil Sen won comfortably on a TMC ticket, with the Left Front and Congress providing the main opposition. Sen's popularity as a music personality had consistently helped the TMC consolidate votes in the constituency.

2026 Contest

The 2026 contest was effectively a repeat of the previous election's main contest, with both the TMC and BJP retaining their respective candidates. Congress hoped to revive its presence through Ratan Kumar Goldar. The result reflects the continuing rivalry between the BJP and TMC in West Bengal, with the BJP making gains in this urban constituency.
