NEW DELHI: Niso Terangpi, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, emerged victorious in the Diphu (Scheduled Tribe) constituency in the 2026 Assam Assembly Election. She secured 90,866 votes, defeating her nearest rival, Independent candidate J.I. Kathar, by a significant margin of 49,740 votes. Kathar managed to garner 41,126 votes.
Other Candidates and Voter Turnout
Independent candidate Rajen Timung, son of the late Kangbura Timung, finished third with 4,072 votes. The Aam Aadmi Party's Biresh Difoesa followed closely with 3,187 votes. A total of seven candidates contested from the Diphu constituency, along with the None of the Above (NOTA) option.
The Diphu Assembly constituency is one of 126 constituencies in the Assam Legislative Assembly, designated as constituency number 110. It is reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates and falls under the Diphu Lok Sabha constituency. The electoral rolls for the 2026 Assembly election recorded a total of 1,82,139 registered voters, comprising 89,691 males, 92,439 females, and 9 individuals belonging to the third gender.
Historical Context
In the 2021 Assembly elections, Bidya Sing Engleng of the BJP won the Diphu seat, defeating Congress candidate Sum Ronghang by a margin of 40,528 votes. During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Amarsing Tisso secured the Diphu Lok Sabha seat, defeating Independent candidate J.I. Kathar with a margin of 1,47,603 votes. According to the Election Commission, the Diphu constituency had 1,52,462 registered voters in 2021, consisting of 75,415 males and 75,553 females, with no voters registered under the third gender.
