Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk has publicly addressed the growing speculation about his future, calling the constant trade rumors “frustrating” after the team’s first-round playoff elimination. Tkachuk, who has spent his entire NHL career with the Senators, spoke out just hours after Ottawa's postseason exit, amid reports that the team could potentially trade him this offseason.
Tkachuk Calls Trade Rumors a Distraction
In a media availability session, Tkachuk expressed his frustration with the ongoing chatter. “I wasn’t here for everybody’s meetings (on Monday), so I haven’t had the chance to talk to (Ottawa General Manager) Steve (Staios), but I feel like I’ve answered this hundreds of times, that…I feel like I’ve never shown (a desire to leave),” he said. “None of those things have ever come out of my mouth, and quite honestly, it’s just getting frustrating. It’s becoming a distraction. I have been fully committed to this team, to this city, and it’s just become a distraction, frustrating to deal with.”
Contract and Commitment
According to PuckPedia, Tkachuk signed a 7-year, $57 million contract with a cap hit of $8.22 million per season for the Ottawa Senators. His contract expires at the end of the 2027-28 season, making him an Unrestricted Free Agent. His annual salary this year was around $10.5 million. Despite the trade speculation, Tkachuk remains fully committed to the organization’s long-term plans and has not indicated any desire to leave.
Playoff Elimination and Team Outlook
The Senators were knocked out of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second year in a row. Last season, they lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs in six games, and this year, Ottawa was swept by the Carolina Hurricanes. The team's disappointing campaign has led to increased scrutiny, but Tkachuk's statement confirms his dedication to turning things around in Ottawa.
