Captain Iyer era begins with defeat as Ireland stun India by 34 runs in 1st T20I
Captain Iyer era starts with loss as Ireland beat India by 34 runs

Shreyas Iyer's captaincy debut ended in disappointment as world champions India suffered a historic 34-run defeat to Ireland in the first T20I at Belfast on Friday. This marked India's first-ever loss to Ireland across any format.

Ireland sets competitive target

Opting to bowl first, India reduced Ireland to 51 for 4 in the seventh over after a strong start. However, Lorcan Tucker's half-century and Gareth Delany's explosive 49 propelled Ireland to 182 for 9 in 20 overs.

Tucker scored 50 off 36 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes, while Delany smashed 49 off 32 balls with three fours and three sixes. Their 64-run partnership for the fifth wicket revived the innings. Delany then added a quickfire 49-run stand with George Dockrell (19 off 10 balls) in just 16 balls.

Harshit Rana was the pick of the Indian bowlers with 3 for 24 in four overs, while Arshdeep Singh took 2 for 28 and Axar Patel claimed 2 for 33. Prasidh Krishna proved expensive, conceding 57 runs in his four overs without a wicket.

India's batting collapse

Chasing 183, India started aggressively with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson adding 16 runs in the first over. However, Jai Moondra dismissed Samson for 5 in the next over. Abhishek continued his assault, reaching his fifty in just 19 balls with seven fours and two sixes.

India reached 50 in 3.5 overs, but wickets fell regularly. Matthew Hollard removed Ishan Kishan for 1 and then dismissed skipper Shreyas Iyer for 3 on his captaincy debut, leaving India at 60 for 3 in 5.1 overs. Tilak Varma (19) and Washington Sundar (9) also fell cheaply.

Shivam Dube scored 25 off 16 balls with one four and two sixes, and Axar Patel made 15 off 16 balls, but both were dismissed as India's lower order collapsed. The last five wickets fell for just 48 runs, and India were bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs.

Key bowlers for Ireland

Matthew Hollard was the standout bowler for Ireland with figures of 3 for 28, while Matthew Humphreys took 3 for 38 and Jai Moondra claimed 2 for 26. Their disciplined bowling exposed India's batting fragility.

Brief Scores: Ireland 182/9 in 20 overs (Lorcan Tucker 50, Gareth Delany 49, Harshit Rana 3/24) beat India 148 all out in 18.5 overs (Abhishek Sharma 50, Shivam Dube 25, Matthew Hollard 3/28) by 34 runs.
