Delhi to Build All-New Mega Cricket Stadium with 70,000 Capacity
New Delhi, February 10, 2026: The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) is moving forward with ambitious plans to construct a brand-new international cricket stadium in the national capital. This state-of-the-art facility is projected to accommodate between 60,000 and 70,000 spectators, significantly enhancing Delhi's sporting infrastructure.
Four Potential Locations Under Consideration
The DDCA has identified four prime locations within Delhi for the proposed stadium: Okhla, Dwarka, Narela, and Rohini. According to DDCA President Rohan Jaitley, the association is actively engaged in discussions with both the Delhi government and the central government to secure land allocation. "We hope to get land clearance by the end of this year," Jaitley stated, emphasizing the need for a site with excellent metro and road connectivity, as well as proximity to hotels and hospitals to boost fan experience.
World-Class Facilities Planned
Beyond the main stadium, the project includes comprehensive facilities such as a dedicated cricket academy, a separate training ground, and multiple practice nets. The DDCA is seeking approximately 45 acres of land to bring this vision to life. This initiative aims to provide world-class amenities that meet international standards, positioning Delhi as a premier destination for cricket events.
Arun Jaitley Stadium to Remain Active
It is important to note that the existing Arun Jaitley Stadium, with its current capacity of 35,000, will continue to host international matches even after the new stadium is operational. The historic venue, constrained by its location between the Ambedkar Stadium and Feroz Shah Kotla, has no scope for expansion, necessitating the development of a new, larger facility.
High-Level Discussions and Historical Context
High-level conversations have taken place involving Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah, and DDCA President Rohan Jaitley. These discussions, held on the sidelines of a recent sports event, underscored mutual enthusiasm for the project. Letters have been formally submitted to both the chief minister's office and the union government to expedite land allotment.
This is not the first attempt to build a new cricket stadium in Delhi; a similar proposal for a sports city in 2002-03 involving the BCCI and Delhi Development Authority did not materialize. However, the current push reflects renewed commitment to upgrading the city's sporting landscape.
