Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has clarified that the decision to shift the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 final from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad was based on the need for a larger stadium, not due to any ticket-related controversies. The final, scheduled to be held at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, was relocated to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which has a significantly higher seating capacity.
Reason for the Shift
Shivakumar stated that the primary reason for the move was to accommodate more spectators, as the Narendra Modi Stadium can hold over 130,000 people, compared to the Chinnaswamy Stadium's capacity of around 40,000. He emphasized that the decision was purely logistical and aimed at providing a better experience for cricket fans.
"There is no truth to the rumors that the shift was due to ticket issues or any other problems in Bengaluru. It is simply because the final requires a larger venue to host the expected crowd," Shivakumar told reporters.
Reactions from Cricket Fans
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among cricket enthusiasts in Bengaluru, who were looking forward to hosting the final. However, many acknowledged the need for a bigger stadium to accommodate the massive fan following of the IPL.
- Some fans expressed disappointment over losing the opportunity to witness the final live in their city.
- Others supported the decision, citing the enhanced experience at the larger venue.
Impact on Bengaluru's Reputation
Shivakumar assured that Bengaluru remains a key venue for IPL matches and that the decision does not reflect any shortcomings of the city. "Bengaluru has always been a great host for cricket, and we will continue to host many matches in the future," he added.
The shift also highlights the growing popularity of the IPL, with organizers seeking venues that can accommodate larger audiences. The Narendra Modi Stadium has previously hosted major events, including the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
Future Plans for Bengaluru Stadium
Discussions are underway to upgrade the Chinnaswamy Stadium to increase its capacity, but no concrete plans have been announced yet. The state government is committed to improving sports infrastructure in Karnataka.
The IPL final is scheduled to take place in May 2025, and preparations are already underway in Ahmedabad to ensure a seamless event.
