A day after police arrested a man involved in an IPL betting racket, Jhansi police on Wednesday apprehended three more individuals accused of running a betting syndicate amounting to Rs100 crore. Police have also identified eight additional suspects who are currently absconding.
Arrests and Incident Details
Presenting the three accused before the media, SSP Jhansi BBGTS Murthy stated that acting on a tip-off, police and the Special Operations Group (SOG) team intercepted an SUV on the Kanpur-Gwalior bypass. The three occupants attempted to flee by ramming their vehicle into the police team, injuring two officers. However, the police managed to capture them.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Shubham Upadhyay (39), Vijay Wadhwa (45), and Nitin Agarwal (44). All three are residents of Jhansi and are accused of operating a multi-crore betting racket involving several other accomplices.
Seized Items and Financial Trail
During the search, police recovered eight mobile phones, one tablet, and Rs84,500 in cash. Additionally, Rs50 lakh in various bank accounts have been frozen. Authorities also seized ledgers containing records of past betting transactions totaling Rs100 crore.
Interrogation revealed that the accused had invested their earnings primarily in immovable properties worth crores. A significant portion of these assets belonged to Shubham Upadhyay, including five plots and two farmhouses.
Legal Proceedings
The three accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Gambling Act. They were remanded to judicial custody and sent to jail.
Absconding Accused
Police have disclosed the names of eight individuals who are part of the same betting racket and are currently on the run. The absconding suspects include Pappu, Pankaj Rai, Saurabh Likhdhari, Akash Chanchalani, Sumit Sahu, Roshan Mubshi, and Ashish Upadhyay, all from Jhansi, along with Sonu Chadha and Harish Kumar from Kanpur.
SSP Murthy stated, "We have dispatched police teams to apprehend the absconding accused. We are committed to dismantling the entire betting syndicate in this district, and extensive investigation and action are ongoing."
