In a historic night at the Wankhede Stadium, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pulled off the highest successful run chase in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, overhauling Mumbai Indians' daunting total of 277 for 3 with four wickets and three balls to spare. The heroics came from the bats of Heinrich Klaasen and Travis Head, who smashed sensational centuries to propel SRH to 281 for 6 in 19.3 overs.
Mumbai's Explosive Start
Earlier, Mumbai Indians, powered by a blistering 126 off 58 balls from Ishan Kishan and a quickfire 84 off 41 from Suryakumar Yadav, posted a mammoth 277 for 3. The duo added 167 runs for the second wicket, setting a solid platform for a late assault. Tim David's unbeaten 45 off 19 balls further boosted the total, leaving SRH needing a record chase.
SRH's Response: Head and Klaasen Take Charge
Chasing 278, SRH lost Abhishek Sharma early for 12, but Travis Head (108 off 51) and Rahul Tripathi (35 off 18) added 72 runs for the second wicket. After Tripathi's dismissal, Head and Klaasen (116 off 48) stitched a match-winning partnership of 168 runs off just 68 balls. Head's innings included 10 fours and 7 sixes, while Klaasen smashed 9 fours and 8 sixes, dismantling Mumbai's bowling attack.
The chase seemed in control until Head fell in the 17th over, but Klaasen continued to hammer the bowlers. Despite a minor wobble with two quick wickets, SRH crossed the line with three balls to spare, thanks to a composed finish from Abdul Samad (18* off 8).
Bowling Woes for Mumbai
Mumbai's bowlers had no answers to the onslaught. Jasprit Bumrah was the most economical, conceding 48 runs in his four overs, but the others leaked runs heavily. Riley Meredith went for 58 runs in 3.3 overs, while Arshad Khan and Kumar Kartikeya conceded 54 and 46 runs respectively.
Record-Breaking Chase
This chase surpassed the previous highest total chased in IPL history, set by Rajasthan Royals (224) earlier this season. It also marked the first time a team successfully chased a 270-plus target in T20 cricket. The win propelled SRH to the top of the points table, while Mumbai Indians slipped to fifth.
Speaking after the match, Heinrich Klaasen said, "We knew we had to go hard from the start. The pitch was good, and we backed ourselves to chase any total. It's a special win." Travis Head added, "The intent was clear. We wanted to take the game deep and keep attacking. It paid off."
Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged the defeat, saying, "We thought 277 was enough, but SRH batted exceptionally well. Credit to them. We need to improve our bowling execution."
