A blistering 63 off just 21 balls from Nicholas Pooran and a 94-run partnership with Mitchell Marsh propelled Lucknow Super Giants to a formidable 228, their first total above 200 in IPL 2026. Yet, it was insufficient to secure a victory.
LSG's Sixth Consecutive Defeat
Lucknow Super Giants slumped to their sixth straight loss as Mumbai Indians chased down the target with ease, exposing deeper flaws within the team. What should have been a momentum-shifting performance turned into another crushing defeat, leaving LSG with only four points from nine games and virtually out of the IPL 2026 playoff race.

Playoff Qualification Benchmark
To qualify for the playoffs, a team typically needs at least 14 points (7 wins) to stay alive, while 16 points (8 wins) is considered a safe zone. The only exception was in 2019 when Sunrisers Hyderabad qualified with 12 points, the only instance of a team making the playoffs with more losses than wins.
What LSG Needs to Do
With five matches remaining, LSG currently have four points. To reach 14 points, they need to win all five remaining games. Reaching 16 points is no longer possible. Simply put, they must secure five wins from five matches. One more loss would almost certainly eliminate them.
LSG's Free Fall
LSG are in free fall, with their last five results reading: L, L, L, L, L. This prolonged losing streak shows no signs of recovery. More concerning is the nature of their defeats. Even when their batting fires, as seen with the 228 against MI, the team fails to close out games. Earlier losses were marked by batting collapses, but now even strong totals are not enough.
The Big Problem: Inability to Close Games
LSG's biggest issue is not just poor form but their inability to finish matches they should be winning. Against MI, they posted 228 yet lost with overs to spare. They have repeatedly failed to defend competitive totals or chase under pressure. Their bowling has lacked control at crucial phases. Despite taking wickets in clusters (4 wickets in 20 balls vs MI), they have failed to sustain pressure. Death overs, in particular, have been expensive and predictable.
On the batting side, there has been over-dependence on individual bursts. Pooran's 63 came after a long lean run; Marsh has been inconsistent; and the middle order, including Rishabh Pant, has not provided stability. Tactically, the usage of Aiden Markram in the middle order or Himmat Singh, first as an Impact Sub and later as a first-choice player in the XI, has raised concerns throughout the season.
Upcoming Fixtures for LSG
- May 7 vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Lucknow) - must-win against a top-two side
- May 10 vs Chennai Super Kings (Chennai) - tough away test
- May 15 vs Chennai Super Kings (Lucknow) - direct rival clash, season-defining
- May 19 vs Rajasthan Royals (Jaipur) - against a top-four team, high pressure
- May 23 vs Punjab Kings (Lucknow) - likely knockout scenario against table leaders
Lucknow Super Giants are not mathematically out, but realistically, they are unlikely to make the top four now. Five wins in five games is a near-impossible ask given their current form. Even their best performances have not translated into wins, and that sums up their season. LSG needs a perfect run and other results to go their way for a miraculous recovery in IPL 2026.
