Spin legend Muttiah Muralidaran has attributed the run-fests in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to the league's emphasis on business and entertainment rather than pure cricket. The former Sri Lankan off-spinner, who is the highest wicket-taker in Test and ODI cricket, believes that the IPL's format and rules are designed to favor batsmen and produce high-scoring matches, which in turn attract more viewers and sponsors.
Business and Entertainment Over Cricket
Muralidaran, who has been part of the IPL as a player and coach, said that the league is primarily a business and entertainment product. He pointed out that the introduction of rules like the Impact Player and the absence of restrictions on foreign players have tilted the balance in favor of batsmen. "The IPL is a business, and they want to entertain the crowd. People want to see sixes and fours, not dot balls," he said.
Impact Player Rule
The Impact Player rule allows teams to substitute a player during the match, which Muralidaran believes has further benefited batsmen. "With the Impact Player, teams can bring in an extra batsman or bowler, but it has mostly been used to strengthen the batting. This has made it even harder for bowlers," he explained.
High Scores the Norm
Muralidaran noted that high scores have become the norm in the IPL, with teams regularly posting totals of 200 or more. He cited the example of this season, where several matches have seen scores exceeding 250. "Bowlers are struggling, and the pitches are also flat. The combination of small grounds, flat pitches, and rules favoring batsmen has made it a batsman's game," he said.
Challenges for Bowlers
The spin legend expressed concern for bowlers, particularly spinners, who have been hit hard in the IPL. He said that spinners are often targeted by batsmen and have to rely on variations and changes in pace to survive. "Spinners need to be brave and try different things. They cannot just bowl their stock ball; they need to mix it up," he advised.
Entertainment Value
Despite the challenges for bowlers, Muralidaran acknowledged that the IPL's entertainment value is unmatched. He said that the league has revolutionized cricket and brought in a new audience. "The IPL has made cricket popular in non-traditional markets. It is a great product for the fans, even if it is tough for bowlers," he added.
Muralidaran's comments come amid ongoing debates about the balance between bat and ball in T20 cricket. While some purists argue that the format has become too batsman-friendly, others believe that it is what the audience wants. The IPL, being the most lucrative T20 league in the world, will likely continue to prioritize entertainment over traditional cricket values.
