Former India pacer Zaheer Khan has shared his insights on how Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) could turn their IPL season around ahead of their upcoming clash against Delhi Capitals (DC).
KKR's Struggles This Season
Kolkata Knight Riders have had a mixed campaign so far, with inconsistent performances leaving them in the middle of the points table. The team has struggled to find momentum, particularly in the batting department, where top-order collapses have been a recurring issue. Zaheer Khan, who served as KKR's mentor in previous seasons, believes the team has the potential to bounce back.
Zaheer's Key Suggestions
Speaking exclusively to India TV, Zaheer highlighted the importance of using the home conditions effectively. He said, "KKR needs to focus on their strengths—spin bowling and aggressive batting in the middle overs. The Eden Gardens pitch traditionally assists spinners, and the team should exploit that." He also emphasized the need for a clear game plan against DC's formidable bowling attack, led by Anrich Nortje and Kuldeep Yadav.
- Spin Dominance: Zaheer advised KKR to rely on their spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy to choke the run flow in the middle overs.
- Batting Approach: He suggested that openers should aim for a strong start, while the middle order needs to accelerate against DC's weaker bowling links.
- Fielding Improvements: Zaheer stressed that KKR must improve their fielding standards to save crucial runs.
Potential Changes in Playing XI
Zaheer hinted that KKR might consider bringing in an extra spinner or a power-hitter to strengthen the lineup. He also backed underperforming players like Andre Russell and Shreyas Iyer to step up in the crucial fixture. "Russell's all-round abilities and Iyer's captaincy will be vital. If they fire, KKR can beat any team," he added.
The match against Delhi Capitals is scheduled for May 8 at Eden Gardens. A win for KKR could revive their playoff hopes, while a loss might jeopardize their season. Zaheer concluded by saying, "It's now or never for KKR. They have the talent; they just need to execute their plans perfectly."
