Mexico coach Javier Aguirre lauded his team's mentality after they defeated Czechia 3-0 to complete a perfect group stage for the first time in their World Cup history. The victory at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 ensured Mexico finished top of Group A with three wins from three matches.
Aguirre Emphasizes Mental Fortitude
Speaking in a post-match press conference, Aguirre admitted he was not pleased with the opening 20 minutes but highlighted the team's recovery as a testament to their mental strength. "I did not like the first 20 minutes, but then we settled down, the team recovered, and that is where we showed the power of mental strength," he said, as quoted by Reuters.
The 67-year-old coach, who captained Mexico in the 2002 and 2010 World Cups, noted that while the performance was good, there are always areas to improve. He stressed that mentality will be crucial as Mexico aims to advance beyond the quarter-finals for the first time. "I think we have improved in that area, that mentality of 'Well, that is it, we have done our part.' This group has character," he added.
Match Overview: Mexico Dominates
Having already secured top spot in Group A and qualification for the Round of 32, Mexico entered the match with little pressure. Czechia, needing a positive result to keep their hopes alive, started strongly. Denis Visinsky was among their brightest performers and came close to scoring in the eighth minute when his low strike narrowly missed the target.
Mexico gradually took control and broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second half. Mateo Chavez used his pace to get behind the Czech defense and calmly finished to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. The momentum stayed with Mexico, and they doubled their advantage just six minutes later when Julian Quinones converted from close range.
Historic Milestone for Ochoa
With the result secure, veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was introduced with 12 minutes remaining. The 40-year-old became one of the few players to feature in six editions of the FIFA World Cup, adding another milestone to his illustrious career. Mexico capped off the victory in stoppage time as Alvaro Fidalgo scored to make it 3-0.
Group Stage Outcome
The result saw Mexico finish the group stage with a perfect record, carrying strong momentum into the Round of 32. For Czechia, the defeat confirmed their elimination from the tournament after failing to secure enough points to advance. Mexico's historic group-stage performance sets a high bar as they pursue their first World Cup title.
