Bhopal Metro, grappling with persistent financial losses since its commercial operations began, has launched a new initiative to generate non-fare revenue by monetizing station and coach space. The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) introduced 'Celebration on Wheels' in early May, allowing individuals and event organizers to rent Metro coaches and select station areas for a variety of functions, including birthday parties, kitty parties, pre-wedding shoots, film shoots, and advertisements.
Initial Bookings and Challenges
According to MPMRCL sources, within four weeks of the scheme's launch, two bookings were finalized in Indore. A third booking, which was scheduled to be the first in Bhopal on Saturday, was ultimately canceled. The Metro's limited commercial operations, spanning a 7-kilometer stretch with eight stations, have struggled to attract the anticipated passenger numbers since services commenced late last year. This has resulted in a significant disparity between income and expenses, described by officials as 'a trickle of income and a torrent of expenses.'
Reimagining the Metro as a Public Venue
With fare revenue insufficient to cover operational costs, officials view the scheme as a way to reimagine the Metro as both a transportation system and a modern public venue. In addition to coach bookings, MPMRCL has announced the leasing of commercial space at stations. Available areas include approximately 620 square meters on the ground floor of Board Office Chauraha Metro station and roughly 2,470 square meters at Subhash Nagar's ground floor. In Indore, the ISBT Metro Station has around 1,050 square meters listed for commercial licensing.
Limited Traction and Future Plans
So far, 'Celebration on Wheels' has not gained widespread traction, prompting officials to refocus on fundamental revenue options such as station retail leasing while continuing to promote the event concept as a supplementary income source. The Bhopal priority corridor is a 7-kilometer elevated stretch from AIIMS to Subhash Nagar, inaugurated on December 21, 2025, forming the first operational segment of Phase 1. Two lines—the Orange Line (AIIMS Bhopal–Karond Circle) and the Blue Line (Bhadbhada–Ratnagiri Tiraha)—totaling approximately 29 kilometers are under construction, with full Phase 1 expected to be completed by 2028.
