Broadcom Secures Deal to Manufacture Google's Future AI Chips
This week, Broadcom officially confirmed that it has agreed to manufacture future versions of Google's artificial intelligence chips, solidifying its crucial role in powering the next wave of generative AI technologies. Alongside this significant announcement, the company also revealed an expanded partnership with Anthropic, the AI giant behind Claude. As part of this enhanced collaboration, Anthropic will gain access to approximately 3.5 gigawatts of computing capacity built on Google's tensor processing units (TPUs). Following the disclosure, Broadcom's shares experienced a notable rise of 3% in extended trading, reflecting investor optimism about the company's growing influence in the AI sector.
Anthropic's Rapid Growth and Strategic Infrastructure Expansion
Anthropic, known for its explosive growth this year, has reported annualized revenue surpassing $30 billion, a substantial increase from $9 billion at the end of 2025. The company now boasts over 1,000 enterprise clients who spend more than $1 million annually, doubling this figure in just the past two months. In a statement, Anthropic CFO Krishna Rao emphasized, "This groundbreaking partnership with Google and Broadcom is a continuation of our disciplined approach to scaling infrastructure. We are building the capacity necessary to serve exponential customer growth while enabling Claude to define the frontier of AI development." Most of this new infrastructure will be strategically located in the United States, according to Anthropic.
Broadcom's Expanding Role in AI Chip Production
Broadcom already plays a key role in helping Google produce its TPUs, which are essential for training and running large AI models. During an earnings call last month, CEO Hock Tan highlighted that Broadcom had delivered 1 gigawatt of compute for Anthropic in 2026 and anticipates demand to surge past 3 gigawatts in 2027. Analysts at Mizuho have estimated that Broadcom could generate $21 billion in AI revenue from Anthropic in 2026, with projections rising to $42 billion in 2027, although Monday's filing did not specify exact dollar amounts.
Broader AI Industry Dynamics and Competitive Landscape
In addition to its work with Google and Anthropic, Broadcom is also collaborating with OpenAI on custom silicon solutions. Both OpenAI and Anthropic currently rely heavily on Nvidia GPUs through major cloud providers such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. OpenAI has further committed to utilizing six gigawatts of AMD GPUs, with the first gigawatt expected to come online later this year. This move underscores the intensifying competition and strategic alliances within the AI hardware market, as companies vie for dominance in powering advanced AI applications.
