AI and Autonomous Systems to Play Decisive Role in Future Conflicts: CDS General Anil Chauhan

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan has underscored the escalating significance of Artificial Intelligence in contemporary military operations, asserting that AI and autonomous systems are poised to assume a decisive role in forthcoming conflicts. During a panel discussion at the 11th Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi on Saturday, Gen Chauhan elaborated on this transformative shift in warfare paradigms.

The Tech Triad: Nuclear Power, AI, and Autonomous Weaponry

In a session titled "The Tech Triad," which focused on nuclear power, AI, and autonomous weaponry, the CDS highlighted the symbiotic relationship between AI and energy requirements. He noted that as AI utilization expands, there will be an immense demand for energy, positing that nuclear power and AI "complement each other" in powering data centers essential for advanced military systems.

Gen Chauhan contrasted traditional military might, which relied on platforms such as tanks, aircraft, ships, and submarines, with modern warfare necessities. "Today, apart from those, one also needs data, network and intelligence," he stated. He further emphasized, "Artificial intelligence is going to play a major role in warfare tomorrow, and so would autonomous systems."

Critical Need for Timely Decision-Making in Multi-Domain Warfare

The CDS explained that the expansion of warfare across physical, synthetic, and cognitive domains has rendered timely decision-making more critical than ever. Automated systems powered by AI can assist militaries in making faster and more effective decisions during combat situations. He stressed that success in future conflicts will hinge not only on conventional platforms but also on the integration of AI, data, and autonomous systems to facilitate rapid battlefield decisions.

"Unless you have automated systems, it becomes difficult to make decisions on time. In combat, if you want to win, there are only two things—timely decisions and right decisions—and AI and autonomous systems somewhat help us to do that," Gen Chauhan remarked.

Complexity of Contemporary Combat and India's AI Journey

Gen Chauhan further elaborated that contemporary combat has grown increasingly complex, occurring across multiple domains. He added that operating AI-based systems necessitates substantial power and energy, describing this as "the future." Regarding India's progress, the CDS acknowledged that the nation is taking "baby steps in AI, and we are yet to formulate how we want to use it," indicating a cautious yet forward-looking approach to adopting these technologies.

This insight from India's top military official underscores a global trend towards technologically advanced warfare, where AI and autonomy are set to redefine strategic and tactical landscapes in conflicts to come.
