Formula E has made a comeback to Sanya after several years, but the event is about more than just high-speed racing in sustainable electric vehicles. The all-electric racing series is dedicated to leaving a positive impact on every location it visits during a race weekend. From giving 250 young people a taste of the Formula E experience to using rental furniture to minimize the environmental footprint of new manufacturing, numerous initiatives have been introduced to promote sustainability. Here is how sustainability is taking center stage at the Lianxin Sanya E-Prix.
Formula E Drives Change with Sustainable Initiatives at the Sanya E-Prix
The Lianxin Sanya E-Prix will be powered by a resilient, multi-source energy mix designed to reduce operational emissions. By combining local grid energy with HVO fuel, the event eliminates reliance on standard fossil fuels for on-site operations.
To support a circular economy, the event avoids the environmental impact of new manufacturing by adopting a rental model for the majority of its assets. This includes all Fan Village furniture, interactive reaction games—which keep entertainment hardware in circulation and help prevent electronic waste—as well as the Kids' Area activations.
Formula E is also investing in the launch of 'Green Link Sanya', a pioneering youth-led STEM initiative that transforms local students into data-driven climate advocates. The program will deploy smart technology and composting infrastructure to reduce community food waste by 20 percent or more while inspiring over 500 residents to adopt more sustainable lifestyles.
Breaking barriers in motorsport, the Sanya Community Tour integrates the FIA Girls on Track framework into an immersive behind-the-scenes experience for 250 local young people and their parents, while ensuring a gender-balanced group of participants.
More about the Sanya E-Prix
The Sanya E-Prix weekend begins on Friday with the first free practice session, followed by the Round 11 race on Saturday, 20 June. The race is scheduled to start at 3:05 pm local time.
Sanya, an island city in China, is well known for its beaches. However, Formula E drivers have expressed some concern over the high temperatures, with conditions currently remaining above 30 degrees Celsius.
Including Sanya, there are seven races remaining on the Formula E calendar this season before the championship finale in London. Jaguar TCS Racing's Mitch Evans currently leads the drivers' standings, with reigning champion Nissan's Oliver Rowland in second place.
