Meta Overhauls AI Strategy in Bid to Compete with Industry Leaders

In a significant internal shift, Meta is restructuring its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy as it intensifies efforts to keep pace with rival AI companies. According to an internal memo obtained by The Wall Street Journal, chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth has been tasked with taking direct supervision of the company's initiatives to integrate AI across its entire workforce.

Leadership Change for 'AI For Work' Initiative

The report reveals that Bosworth, a long-time executive internally known as "Boz," will now lead the "AI For Work" program. He assumes control from fellow top executive Guy Rosen, a move designed to enhance the social media giant's agility and operational efficiency. In his communication to employees, Bosworth expressed confidence in the progress achieved thus far.

"As I've been digging in I've found we have a lot to be proud of. The early pilots, the willingness to pressure-test new ideas, and the speed at which we've enabled teams to embrace AI tools has created real momentum and sets us up for this next phase," Bosworth stated in the note.

From Metaverse Focus to AI Leadership

Andrew Bosworth is a Meta veteran, having joined the company in 2006. Since his appointment as CTO in 2022, he has primarily been associated with Meta's Metaverse operations, overseeing the development of virtual and augmented reality hardware such as the Quest headsets. Recently, Meta announced the discontinuation of Horizon Worlds for VR, but Bosworth clarified that Horizon Worlds for Quest will remain available for the "foreseeable future."

During an Instagram AMA session, Bosworth explained that the community strongly advocated for continued access to Horizon Worlds on Meta Quest devices. "We have decided, just today in fact, we will keep Horizon Worlds working in VR for existing games," he said. He further noted that existing Horizon Unity runtime games will persist in VR without being ported to mobile platforms, ensuring support for dedicated fans.

This strategic realignment underscores Meta's commitment to leveraging AI across its operations, positioning Bosworth at the forefront of this critical transformation as the company navigates the competitive AI landscape.
