Ludhiana: Drone pilot training at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is set for a major boost after the university nearly halved its course fee from Rs 35,000 to Rs 18,000. The price cut has already attracted over 80 new applications, a steep jump considering only 10 candidates had completed the training since it launched in April last year.
Course Details and Certification
The week-long course prepares pilots for precision farming tasks like pesticide spraying, crop monitoring, and aerial mapping. Graduates receive a remote pilot certificate valid for 10 years, a legal requirement for commercial drone operations under DGCA rules.
The training covers small-class rotorcraft drones (up to 25 kg). The curriculum includes theory, simulator sessions, and practical flying, alongside modules on aviation regulations, assembly, and maintenance. To be eligible, applicants must be between 18 and 65 years old, have cleared matriculation, and provide medical fitness certification.
University's Role and Career Opportunities
As an independent government body in Punjab approved by the DGCA to offer this certification, the university aims to support farmer-producer organisations and custom hiring centers.
Beyond self-employment in spraying and mapping services, certified pilots can find opportunities with government agriculture departments, private drone firms, and agricultural service providers.
