Berhampur Police Crack Down on Mule Account Network in Major Cyber Crime Operation

In a significant breakthrough, the Berhampur cyber crime and economic offences police have dismantled a sophisticated syndicate involved in creating and managing mule accounts. The arrests were made on Sunday as part of the ongoing Operation Cyber Kavach, a targeted initiative to combat digital financial fraud.

Arrests and Investigation Details

The police apprehended two individuals, including a 38-year-old woman, who were central to the operation. The accused have been identified as Satya Narayan Dash (51), a resident of Goutamnagar, and his 38-year-old niece. According to authorities, these mule accounts functioned as primary channels for laundering illicit funds across an extensive nationwide cyber criminal network.

Investigations revealed that more than eight mule accounts were operated under the names of relatives of the accused. These accounts were used to deposit and transfer money that had been fraudulently obtained from victims throughout India. The total amount swindled from victims is estimated to be around Rs 1 crore, accumulated over a year since 2025, as confirmed by SP Berhampur Saravana Vivek M.

Impact and Broader Implications

This crackdown highlights the growing threat of cyber-enabled financial crimes and the critical role of specialized police units in safeguarding digital economies. The successful bust underscores the effectiveness of Operation Cyber Kavach in identifying and neutralizing such criminal enterprises. Police officials emphasized that mule accounts are a common tool used by cyber criminals to obscure the trail of stolen funds, making investigations challenging.

The arrests serve as a warning to those involved in similar illicit activities and demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement to protect citizens from online fraud. Authorities are continuing their probe to uncover further connections and potentially more accounts linked to this syndicate.
