Stryker Cyberattack: Iranian Hackers Target Global Medical Device Leader
Stryker Corporation, the largest medical device manufacturer in the United States, has been hit by a significant cyberattack that disrupted its global network operations last week. According to a Reuters report, an Iranian-linked hacker group has claimed responsibility for the attack, raising concerns about the security of critical healthcare infrastructure.
Ongoing Service Disruptions and Restoration Efforts
Five days after the initial attack, Stryker has provided an update confirming that services remain disrupted across its global network. The company stated it is "prioritizing restoration of systems that directly support customers, ordering and shipping" in an official update dated March 15 posted on its website.
"We are working closely with our global manufacturing sites to manage operations and mitigate potential impacts, supported by our robust resiliency and business continuity plans," the company announced in its latest communication.
Product Safety Assurances Amid Network Compromise
Despite the network disruption, Stryker has emphasized that all its medical products remain safe for use. The company clarified that the attack was contained to Stryker's internal Microsoft environment and did not affect any connected or digital products in the field.
"All Stryker products across our global portfolio, including connected, digital, and life-saving technologies, remain safe to use," the company assured customers and healthcare providers. "This event was contained to Stryker's internal Microsoft environment, and as a result it did not affect any of our products—connected or otherwise."
Communication and Operational Continuity Measures
Stryker has confirmed that it is safe for sales representatives to visit hospitals and medical facilities, and for communication to continue via phone and email. The company clarified that this was not a ransomware attack and that no malware was deployed to their systems.
While electronic ordering systems remain temporarily unavailable, Stryker sales representatives are working directly with customers and distributors to facilitate manual ordering where possible. The company has established protocols to reconcile orders placed before the disruption and process electronic orders once systems are fully restored.
Fortune 300 Company's Cybersecurity Response
As a Fortune 300 corporation, Stryker emphasized its embedded cybersecurity policies and procedures designed to protect products in the field. The company stated it has leveraged these established protocols to confirm that connected medical devices were not impacted by the incident.
"This process at Stryker provides additional assurances that no potential vulnerabilities or risk of exploitation related to our connected products exist," the company explained in its detailed update.
Path Forward and Customer Commitment
Stryker has reported that its core transactional systems are already on a clear path to full recovery. The company continues to prioritize systems that directly support customers, ordering, and shipping operations.
"There is nothing more important to us than the customers and patients we serve, and we are grateful for your continued support and partnership," Stryker concluded in its public statement, underscoring its commitment to restoring normal operations while maintaining patient safety as its highest priority.
