A 61-year-old pilgrim from Nepal, Krishan Thakur, a resident of Mohatri in Kathmandu, died after falling seriously ill while returning from the Amarnath cave shrine via the Baltal route. He became unconscious near the Navyuga Tunnel in Banihal, officials reported.
Thakur was immediately taken to the health care facility at the Lamber yatra ground and later referred to the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) in Banihal. Subsequently, he was shifted to the Government Medical College in Anantnag, where he succumbed to his illness on Thursday, according to officials.
Four Pilgrims Injured in Taxi Accident
In a separate incident, four registered Amarnath pilgrims sustained minor injuries after the taxi carrying them to the Baltal base camp met with an accident in Banihal. The injured were identified as Varesh Yadav (44) and Usha Devi (55), both residents of Faridabad in Haryana, and Natasha Sharma (28) and Neharka (20), both residents of Uttarakhand.
Officials stated that the injured were promptly shifted by police and emergency response teams to SDH, Banihal, where they received first aid. Hospital authorities confirmed that all four pilgrims were in stable condition and under observation.
Investigation Underway
The police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the taxi accident. No further details have been released regarding the circumstances leading to the crash.
The Amarnath Yatra, which attracts thousands of pilgrims annually, has seen occasional incidents of illness and accidents due to the challenging terrain and high altitude. Authorities continue to deploy medical and emergency response teams along the route to ensure pilgrim safety.
