At least seven people, including two children, were killed and 20 others injured in rain-related incidents across Pakistan's Punjab province in the last 24 hours, reported Dawn citing the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The torrential rains also damaged homes and killed livestock, with the PDMA recording 14 rain-related incidents across the province up to 2 pm on Saturday.
Details of Fatalities and Damage
The fatalities resulted from structural collapses and drowning, while injuries were caused by roof collapses and electrocution. Seven house roofs collapsed and five buffaloes died in the incidents. Addressing a press conference at PDMA headquarters, Director General Umar Abbas stated that monsoon-related incidents had so far claimed 22 lives and left 183 people injured across Punjab. He added that authorities were monitoring ageing electricity infrastructure to minimise power-related accidents during the rainy season.
River Levels and Flood Risk
Meanwhile, swathes of land in Punjab have come under water following torrential rains and overflow of several drains. The Ravi and Chenab rivers are expected to reach medium to high flood levels in the next 24 hours, according to Dawn. Pakistan has experienced severe monsoon seasons in recent years, with 2022 floods killing over 1,700 people, displacing millions, and causing an estimated USD 40 billion in economic losses. In 2025, catastrophic floods claimed over 800 lives and affected more than 1.2 million people across multiple provinces, with potential losses reaching USD 50 billion.
Monsoon Season Context
Pakistan faces regular monsoon flooding from June to September, often resulting in deadly landslides, infrastructure damage, and large-scale displacement, particularly in densely populated or poorly drained regions. The PDMA continues to coordinate relief efforts and urges residents to exercise caution during the ongoing rainy season.
