Dutch Deputy Prime Minister Rob Jetten has pressed India to facilitate the return of a young girl who was allegedly abducted by her father in 2016. The child, identified as Insiya, was only two years old when she was taken from Amsterdam and brought to India.
Diplomatic Discussions
Jetten raised the matter during his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a post on X, Jetten stated, "We also spoke about the case regarding the abduction of Insiya to India by her father." The Dutch official emphasized the need for cooperation in resolving the case.
Legal Proceedings
The father was convicted in the Netherlands and sentenced to eight years in prison for the abduction. However, Indian officials refrained from commenting, citing that the matter is sub judice, meaning it is under judicial consideration.
This case has drawn attention to the complexities of international child abduction cases, particularly when legal systems intersect. The Dutch government continues to seek the safe return of Insiya, who is now believed to be in India.
The meeting between Jetten and Modi also covered other bilateral issues, but the abduction case remained a key point of discussion. The Indian government has not yet issued a formal response regarding the extradition or return of the child.
