Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has stated that the state incurred losses amounting to Rs 12,500 crore due to the recent monsoon disasters. The heavy rains and subsequent floods caused widespread damage across the region, affecting thousands of people and disrupting normal life.
Extent of Damage
The monsoon season brought unprecedented rainfall, leading to landslides, flash floods, and extensive damage to roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure. Agricultural fields were submerged, resulting in significant crop losses. Many homes were destroyed or damaged, leaving families displaced. The state government has been working tirelessly to assess the full extent of the damage and provide relief to affected communities.
Government Response
Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that the state government is committed to providing all necessary assistance to those affected. Rescue and relief operations were launched promptly, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) deployed to affected areas. Temporary shelters and relief camps have been set up for displaced persons, and food and medical supplies are being distributed.
The government has also initiated a comprehensive survey to evaluate the damage to public and private property. A detailed report will be submitted to the central government seeking financial assistance for reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts.
Impact on Economy
The losses of Rs 12,500 crore have dealt a severe blow to the state's economy, which heavily relies on tourism and agriculture. The destruction of infrastructure has disrupted transportation and communication networks, hampering economic activities. The agriculture sector, a major source of livelihood for many, has been particularly hard hit, with crops worth crores destroyed.
The Chief Minister urged the central government to provide adequate financial support to help the state recover from this disaster. He also called for a long-term plan to mitigate the impact of such natural calamities in the future, including better early warning systems and infrastructure resilient to extreme weather events.
Relief and Rehabilitation
The state government has announced a compensation package for the families of those who lost their lives in the disasters. Ex-gratia payments have been made to the next of kin of the deceased. Additionally, financial assistance is being provided for the repair of damaged houses and for the restoration of livelihoods.
Efforts are underway to restore essential services such as electricity, water supply, and telecommunications in the affected areas. Road connectivity is being restored on a priority basis to facilitate the movement of relief materials and personnel.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the rescue teams and volunteers who worked tirelessly in challenging conditions to save lives and provide aid. He also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities during the ongoing relief operations.
