India and Sweden have upgraded their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Swedish counterpart Ulf Kristersson endorsed an upgraded Joint Action Plan for 2026-2030. The plan encompasses green transition, emerging technologies, trade, security and defence, climate action, and economic frameworks.
Shared Values and Economic Partnership
Addressing a European roundtable attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, PM Modi emphasized that India and Sweden are bound by shared values of democracy, transparency, innovation, and sustainability. These principles, he said, provide a strong foundation for an ambitious and forward-looking economic partnership. "We consider innovation to be the medium of development... sustainability to be our responsibility. And we consider democracy to be our strength," stated the Prime Minister.
Strategic Convergence for Global Stability
Underlining the significance of political, economic, and strategic convergence between India and Europe for global peace and stability, Modi noted that in the current tense global situation, close cooperation between democracies like India and Sweden is of paramount importance. "India has always relied on dialogue and diplomacy to resolve various tensions and problems. India and Sweden agree that terrorism is a serious challenge for the entire humanity," he said. The PM also thanked his Swedish counterpart for expressing solidarity with India following the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
Highest Swedish Honour Conferred on PM Modi
In a special ceremony held in Gothenburg, PM Modi was conferred the 'Royal Order of the Polar Star, Degree Commander Grand Cross,' one of Sweden's oldest and most distinguished honours, instituted in the 18th century. This award is Sweden's highest honour bestowed upon foreign heads of government, recognizing exceptional public service and contributions to strengthening relations with Sweden.
Defence Cooperation Moving Beyond Buyer-Seller Model
Modi highlighted the expanding defence cooperation between the two countries. "Our cooperation in the defence sector is continuously expanding. The establishment of production facilities in India by Swedish companies stands as a testament to the fact that we are moving beyond a mere buyer-seller relationship towards a long-term industrial partnership," he affirmed.
Focus on Supply Chains, Green Transition, and Digital Technologies
Discussions also centered on strengthening cooperation in supply chains, green transition, sustainable mobility, life sciences, and digital technologies. According to an Indian readout, "Prime Minister Modi underlined the importance of combining Sweden's strengths in innovation and sustainability with India's scale, talent and growth momentum." The upgraded partnership is expected to deepen ties across multiple sectors, fostering mutual growth and global stability.
