Repatriation of Indian Nationals Underway After Qatar LNG Explosion
The Indian Embassy in Doha announced on June 25, 2026, that the mortal remains of four out of twelve Indian nationals who lost their lives in the Ras Laffan industrial accident are being repatriated to India. The embassy stated in a post on X that efforts are ongoing to repatriate the remaining remains soon.
The embassy expressed gratitude to Qatari authorities and Indian community organizations for their support and coordination. It also confirmed that it has been in touch with Indians injured in the accident.
Diplomatic Outreach Following Tragic Incident
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal detailed a key diplomatic outreach following the tragedy. He confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a phone call from the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who expressed deep grief over the loss of 12 Indian lives.
Jaiswal stated, "We had a tragic accident in Qatar. We lost 12 Indian lives. Yesterday, the Prime Minister received a telephone call from His Highness the Emir of Qatar, who offered condolences on the loss of lives of Indian nationals in this tragic accident in the industrial city."
Details of the Explosion
The devastating incident occurred on Sunday night, June 23, 2026, when an explosion at the Barzan local gas supply facility at Ras Laffan Industrial City killed 13 people, including 12 Indians. The facility is operated by QatarEnergy LNG. Reports indicate that 66 people were injured in the explosion, including Indian nationals.
Prime Minister Modi's Response
Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude for the Emir's outreach on social media, saying, "I thank His Highness the Amir of Qatar for his phone call and condolences on the loss of lives of Indian nationals in the tragic accident at Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar."
According to official sources, PM Modi and the Emir share the grief of the families who have lost their loved ones and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured. The Indian Embassy continues to coordinate with Qatari authorities to ensure the repatriation of all mortal remains and provide assistance to the injured.
