The derailment occurred around 9:10 PM on the Kamptee-Kalamna section of the UP line, approximately three kilometers before reaching Kalamna station.

The mishap involved the first pair of wheels on the leading bogie coming off the tracks, causing the train to come to an abrupt halt near Gauri Shankar Nagar. This unexpected stop led to brief panic among the travelers onboard, but authorities quickly assured that all passengers were safe and unharmed.
Immediately following the accident, restoration teams from the Southeast Central Railway (SECR) were dispatched to the site. An accident relief team also rushed to the location to assess the situation and initiate recovery operations. As a result of the derailment, SECR has announced the cancellation of three MEMU services on the affected route for Monday, March 30. The cancelled trains include:
- Train 68716: Itwari-Gondia MEMU
- Train 68712: Gondia-Dongargarh MEMU
- Train 68710: Dongargarh-Raipur MEMU
