Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Inaugurates 120 Mist Spray Systems at IGI Airport to Combat Air Pollution
In a significant move to tackle air pollution, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday inaugurated 120 mist spray systems at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) premises. This initiative reinforces her government's steadfast commitment to the 'Clear Air, Clean Delhi' campaign, aiming to ensure a healthier environment for all residents and visitors.
Strategic Installation by GMR Group to Enhance Air Quality
The mist spray systems have been strategically installed by the GMR Group across the airport with the primary objective of controlling air pollution levels. This effort is designed to provide passengers with a cleaner and more breathable atmosphere, thereby improving their overall travel experience. The Delhi International Airport Limited, a joint venture consortium between GMR Airports Limited and the Airports Authority of India, is overseeing this environmental enhancement project.
Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that the Delhi government is adopting a scientific approach by implementing short-term, mid-term, and long-term strategies to address pollution comprehensively. She highlighted that similar mist spray systems have already been deployed on major roads throughout the capital and at 143 elevated metro stations, showcasing a widespread effort to mitigate dust and particulate matter.
Expansion of Monitoring and Future Plans for Pollution Control
In addition to the mist systems, the government has expanded its real-time air quality monitoring network to 46 metro stations, establishing it as the largest such network in any Indian city. This expansion allows for more accurate tracking and management of pollution levels. Through the 'Vayu Rakshak' initiative, strict compliance with pollution control norms is being enforced to ensure environmental regulations are met.
The mist spray systems at IGI Airport are expected to significantly enhance the air quality experience for passengers and bolster Delhi's environmental image. Chief Minister Gupta expressed gratitude to the GMR Group for their proactive role in this initiative, noting that it aligns with broader governmental goals.
Looking ahead, a statement from the Delhi Chief Minister's Office revealed plans to expand the mist spray system to 600 poles in the future. This expansion will further strengthen dust control measures at the airport and its surrounding areas, contributing to a more sustainable urban environment.
Long-Term Vision for a Greener Delhi
Chief Minister Gupta outlined several ambitious long-term strategies to combat pollution effectively. These include fully electrifying the public bus fleet by 2029, expanding the metro network to reduce vehicular emissions, developing extensive electric vehicle charging infrastructure, deploying over 1,000 water sprinklers across the city to suppress dust, and implementing AI-based dust monitoring at construction sites. These measures collectively aim to create a cleaner, healthier Delhi for future generations.
