Disneyland Paris Unveils Europe's Largest Solar Parking Canopy
In a groundbreaking move for sustainable tourism, Disneyland Paris has quietly transformed one of its most ordinary spaces—a massive visitor parking lot—into one of Europe's most ambitious renewable energy installations. Covering 11,200 parking spaces with over 82,000 solar panels, the resort has constructed the largest solar canopy over a parking lot on the continent, capable of producing 36 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity each year.
Massive Scale and Dual Benefits
The project spans nearly 20 hectares, equivalent to about 49 acres, of the resort's main guest parking area. Installed across this vast expanse are approximately 82,000 photovoltaic panels with a combined capacity of around 36 megawatts, solidifying its status as Europe's premier solar parking canopy. Annually, the system generates enough clean power to supply the equivalent electricity needs of roughly 17,000 homes, while also reducing carbon emissions in the surrounding Val d'Europe region by an estimated 890 tonnes of CO2.
Beyond its energy production, the canopy serves a dual purpose by providing shade and protection for vehicles, including cars, camper vans, and tour buses. This innovative approach turns everyday infrastructure into a climate solution, enhancing visitor comfort during hot weather and shielding vehicles from rain and snow.
Strategic Environmental Initiative
Construction of the solar canopy commenced in 2020 as part of a collaboration between Disneyland Paris and French solar developer Urbasolar, a subsidiary of Swiss energy company Axpo. This initiative aligns with Disney's broader environmental commitments, which include targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase renewable energy usage across its global operations.
Natacha Rafalski, President of Disneyland Paris, emphasized the project's significance, stating, "We want to lead by example and demonstrate that large tourism destinations can operate responsibly while contributing to environmental progress." The solar canopy has become a visible symbol of the resort's efforts to integrate sustainability into its core infrastructure.

Environmental planners also highlight that such installations help mitigate urban heat islands, where asphalt surfaces absorb and retain heat, by providing ground shading. Additionally, the project includes electric vehicle charging infrastructure, encouraging cleaner transportation options for park visitors.
