Elephant Herd Triggers High Alert in Bokaro, Villages on Edge
The forest department in Bokaro issued an urgent high alert on Tuesday evening after a herd of elephants was sighted at Lugu Buru hill. This development has sparked significant concerns that the animals might descend into nearby villages at any moment, posing a serious threat to local residents.
Herd's Movement and Recent Attacks
The herd, consisting of five elephants, has been wandering in the bordering areas of Bokaro, Ramgarh, and Hazaribagh districts. Over the past month, these elephants have launched multiple attacks on villagers, resulting in the deaths of approximately a dozen people in separate incidents. The continuous movement of the herd has heightened fears among the local population.
Official Warnings and Safety Measures
Forest department officer Sundeep Shinde emphasized the urgency of the situation. "Residents of Chorgawa, Murpa, Khakhanda, Gangpur, Beldih, Tulbul, Pindra, Tutijharna, Dakasadam, Seheda, Tilaiya, Naran, Lawalang, Ambadih, and Keri have been advised to remain vigilant," he stated. "Elephants tend to move swiftly, particularly after dark, making nighttime especially dangerous."
To ensure safety, villagers have been urged to:
- Stay indoors during the night
- Avoid venturing outside unnecessarily
- Take immediate shelter in concrete houses or move to rooftops if elephants approach habitation areas
Officials noted that rooftops have proven to be the safest refuge in past incidents, providing a critical escape route during such emergencies.
Community Response and Ongoing Monitoring
The forest department is closely monitoring the herd's movements and coordinating with local authorities to prevent further tragedies. Community awareness campaigns are being intensified to educate residents on how to respond during elephant encounters. The high alert remains in effect as officials work to mitigate risks and protect vulnerable villages from potential attacks.
