Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Sunday that the Global South is disproportionately affected by climate change, emphasizing the need for a stronger partnership between India and Seychelles to address this challenge. Speaking at a joint press conference with Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan in New Delhi, Modi highlighted the shared vulnerabilities and common interests of developing nations.
Climate Change Impact on Developing Nations
Modi noted that countries in the Global South, including India and Seychelles, are facing the severe consequences of climate change despite contributing minimally to global emissions. He called for enhanced cooperation in climate resilience, renewable energy, and sustainable development. The Prime Minister reiterated India's commitment to the International Solar Alliance and other green initiatives.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including maritime security, counter-terrorism, and economic cooperation. Modi announced a new line of credit of $100 million for Seychelles to support infrastructure and development projects. He also emphasized India's role as a first responder in the region, citing assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters.
Strategic Partnership in the Indian Ocean
President Ramkalawan acknowledged India's support and stressed the importance of a rules-based order in the Indian Ocean region. He welcomed India's increased engagement with Seychelles and other island nations. The two sides signed agreements on sharing of white shipping information and cooperation in hydrography, enhancing maritime domain awareness.
Commitment to Global South
Modi asserted that India will continue to amplify the voices of developing countries in global forums. He called for reform of multilateral institutions to better represent the interests of the Global South. The Prime Minister's remarks came ahead of the upcoming COP28 climate summit, where he plans to advocate for climate justice and increased climate finance for vulnerable nations.
