Gujarat Grapples with Early Summer Heat in February, Temperatures Defy Seasonal Norms

In a departure from the typically pleasant February climate, Gujarat is witnessing an early onset of summer-like conditions, with both night and daytime temperatures soaring well above normal levels. The state is gradually getting a feel of summer, as nights consistently stay warmer than usual and daytime readings frequently touch the thirties, marking a significant shift from the expected winter chill.

Record Temperature Departures Across Key Locations

The highest departure from normal in minimum temperature was recorded in the picturesque Union Territory of Diu, where the mercury settled at 19°C, a sharp 6.3°C above the typical benchmark. This notable spike underscores the weakening grip of winter across the region. Several other weather stations also reported minimum temperatures ranging from 4°C to 6°C above normal, indicating a steady and widespread warming trend.

Coastal areas are not spared from this unseasonal heat. The city of Bhavnagar witnessed a significant rise in night temperature, recording a minimum of 20.8°C, which is 6.1°C above normal. Similarly, day temperatures remained elevated, with around 18 towns and cities across Gujarat recording maximum temperatures close to or exceeding 30°C, disrupting the usual February coolness.

Surat Emerges as the Hottest Spot in Gujarat

Surat emerged as the hottest location in the state, with a maximum temperature of 34.6°C, highlighting the intensity of the heatwave. It was followed closely by Dang at 33.6°C, Veraval at 33.2°C, and Porbandar at 32.8°C. Other major cities like Rajkot recorded a maximum of 32.3°C, while Daman logged 32.4°C, reflecting the widespread and persistent warmth engulfing Gujarat.

Even typically cooler regions are experiencing unusual conditions. The lush green, forested district of Dang, known for its milder climate, witnessed unusually warm weather, further emphasizing the fading influence of winter. Among other key stations, Vadodara recorded a minimum of 19.6°C, which is 5.4°C above normal, while Surat's minimum was 20.6°C, a 4.6°C increase. Additional readings include Amreli at 18°C (+4.9°C), Rajkot at 16.4°C (+2.5°C), Bhuj at 15.8°C (+3.2°C), and Porbandar at 16.3°C (+1.6°C).

IMD Attributes Warmth to Dry Winds and Clear Skies

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin provided insights into the meteorological factors driving this early summer feel. It stated that dry northeasterly to easterly winds are prevailing at lower atmospheric levels over the region. These winds are keeping skies largely clear, which in turn contributes to warmer afternoons and mild nights across Gujarat. This atmospheric pattern is a key driver behind the unseasonal temperature rise, affecting both urban and rural areas alike.

As Gujarat navigates this unexpected warmth, residents and authorities are advised to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions. The persistent high temperatures signal a notable shift in seasonal patterns, with implications for health, agriculture, and daily life in the state.
